Salento beaches worth seeing at least once

Two seas, one peninsula

Salento has a rare stroke of luck: two seas just a few kilometres apart. On the Ionian side, where Gallipoli lies, you will find long beaches of pale sand and sunsets over the water; on the Adriatic side, towards Otranto, cliffs, coves and sea stacks.

After Baia Verde and Punta della Suina, which we covered in our weekend itinerary, here are five beaches worth the drive.

Five beaches not to miss

  • Pescoluse

Very fine sand and shallow water for dozens of metres: it is known as the “Maldives of Salento”. Perfect with children.
  • Punta Prosciutto

Sand dunes and Mediterranean scrub north of Porto Cesareo, with crystal-clear water right from the shore.
  • Porto Selvaggio

A rocky bay inside a nature park north of Gallipoli, reached on foot through the pine forest. Bring comfortable shoes.
  • Torre Sant'Andrea

On the Adriatic, the pale rock stacks rising from the turquoise water are among the most photographed sights in Apulia.
  • Baia dell'Orte

South of Otranto, low rocks and crystal-clear water: quieter than the beach clubs and ideal for snorkelling.
Our tip: set off early

Our tip: set off early

In high season the best-known beaches fill up by mid-morning and parking near the sea runs out quickly. Leave by nine, bring water and a parasol, and save the afternoon for a swim closer to the hotel.

Our reception is always happy to give you directions and up-to-date tips.
